Carboxin

Description

Carboxin is a synthetic chemical used as a fungicide in the commercial cultivation of a variety of food crops including grains, nuts, corn and vegetables. Its use for this application allows it entry into the environment where it may contaminate air, soil, water and the food chain.
Commercial brand names for carboxin include Cadan, Padan, Sanvex, Thiobel, Vegetox and Vitavax.

Who's at Risk

Individuals who work in the manufacture or application of carboxin, as well as those exposed to contaminated air, soil, or water, may be at greater risk of exposure than the general public.

Sources

As carboxin residues have been detected in various foods, eating carboxin-contaminated foodstuffs may be one of the significant means by which the general population is exposed to this chemical.

Physical Effects

Carboxin disrupts the production of cellular energy in the mitochondria, the energy factories of our cells, through inhibiting the activity of an enzyme compound that is necessary for efficient energy manufacture. This results in a diminished supply of cellular energy available to power the cells, the essential building blocks of our tissues and organs, and can therefore lead to impairment of optimal physiological functioning.
